ayuune sule brings the soul into kologo power. in kumasi, the second city of ghana and capitol of the ashanti region, ayuune sule is the main kologo star. the most famous kologo player these days in the whole of ghana and abroad is king ayisoba. together with king ayisoba, guy one, atongo zimba and sambo, he represents the generation that broke kologo music outside of the north east region of ghana. in europe we know ayuune sule as a member of king ayisoba’s band and as a solo artist who often opens up for his shows.

the 30d records machinery does not stop. a new stylistic adventure has been concretized in the new label’s series “eyes have it”, which will be conducted by the well-known sonar and 30d’s resident dj, angel molina, as a&r. the lucio fulci’s movies iconic scary-eyes synthesizes the series essence perfectly. “eyes have it” builds the fundamentals for the boundless experimentation, lightlessness, cold and mechanical dynamics. the ep “shelter” is the very first result of this new proposal, an incontestable work signed by isolated lines. the swiss artist has a solid background in underground music throughout various projects, in and outside of electronics. that means a wider creative resources that can be easily noticeable, for instance, in the music harmonies. avant-garde, solid sound and savoir-faire, that is what defines the isolated lines production. “shelter” ep stylistic codes are crystal clear, brazen obstinacy of the rhythm base which sets the basis for epic distorted textures, that may become deeply emotional, like in the cases of “onshore” and “landfall”. steadfast rhythmic cycles on slamming sound mantras. furthermore, the ep includes an industrially nervous revision of “onshore” constructed by 30drop. isolated lines’ “shelter” ep is an utterly flawless starting point for this strongly promising new 30d series. so henceforth, keep always an eye on “eyes have it”!

back in 1962 when this, their third album was released, the group consisted of smokey, ronnie white, pete moore and brother and sister bobby and claudette rogers. while he had yet to be featured in the billing by name that came in 1965 robinson’s photo was top and centre of the lp cover. the ten songs featured barely amounted to 27 minutes of music, but what i ll try something new may have lacked in quantity it more than made up for in quality. and the reason was clear. six of the ten songs stem from robinson s pen five solo efforts and the sixth, closing track this i swear, i promise , a co-write with janie bradford. let s savour an album that, as one perceptive critic put it, features the miracles at their early best... as young, eager kids just starting out, filled with optimism, youthful exuberance and enthusiasm, long before record-company politics, favouritism and restrictions changed the group forever.

brazilian born producer and self-confessed studio freak terr will be making her debut with have you ever on permanent vacation. she found recognition with her creative, quirky electronica productions, said to be heavily influenced by her use of analog gear, her sound is a combination of techno, house and disco with futuristic textures and elements. throwback disco meets techno, alongside a scintillating synth in have your ever, not forgetting the mesmerising robotic female vocal hook. a thunderous kick drum bass line combo takes the dub version into a more late-night dance edit of the original. hauntingly cinematic with its hook line, memoir hints on some intergalactic synthetic inspiration, which builds into a nearly disco-esque breakdown. this track lends well to roll into twenty thousand leagues metallic and bubbling with its multi-layered textures. its delicate and finely tuned.

edmondson first came to my attention with his lobster theramin distributed release, flamingo tripper, on his own label lissoms. or so i thought. turns out he was actually a guy who used to serve me in one of my favourite pubs in newcastle. back in those days he was a dub step / drum and bass kid, and as per the trend with all of those guys, hes now showing the house heads how its done, with a much keener feel for sound design, groove and a better ear for a sample than 90% of us lazy people who cut our teeth on a 4/4 beat. edmondson (or sean as i did know him and how i know him once again) is really one of the most exciting producers out there right now for me, and i couldnt be happier that weve reconnected and hes kindly allowed me me me to present some of his amazing music. we have love is an instant classic, and psg is a work of pure emotive art. to remix we have love, ive enlisted dauwd (fresh from his amazing album on technicolour). sean suggested him, and i jumped on the suggestion as he was one of the first people i met when i moved to berlin 4 years ago, and ive been trying to figure out a way of working with him since. he takes a we have love down a kind of more delicate and steppy route. its very pretty, but also really makes you want to dance. to remix psg i asked asok. again, i thought i first met asok about 7 or 8 years ago, when he came and played for a party i used to throw in newcastle. after becoming good friends over the years, we got chatting and it turned out that we were both in magaluf in 1998, and may have actually been involved in the same street brawl. thats not something either of us are proud of, but its definitely food for thought. i’m biased, but i think his remix is my favourite thing he’s ever done, and i love everything he’s touched musically to date, so thats probably an even bigger endorsement than it first seems. his version is big.

norwegian duo smerz had a prolific 2017, which saw the copenhagen-based henriette and catharina play the likes of club 2 club, moma ps1, sell out half life parties of their own, as well as release five new tracks along with five self-directed videos. clearly not ones to wait around, smerz go in to the new year with their have fun ep on the horizon for release via xl recordings in march 2018. with their unique electronic sound blending deconstructed club music, minimalist r&b and experimental pop and techno, smerz are also prolific djs who s djing style takes a similar route. mixing live vocals over their own music and interlaced with choice cuts aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this duo dj hard in a live setting and are thrilling to watch as well as listen. smerz currently host their own monthly nts radio residency, mixing cutting-edge dance music and darker tones, in what is turning in to their trademark style.

ess o ess (aka chris stoker and jamie blanco) return to not an animal to further indulge in the organic house territories previously mined for the previous releases. the duo have an uncanny nack for deftly balancing the rockier end of disco with the authenticity of early house, and never more so than on -secret place. the original bounces and struts in a pleasingly groove laden hypnotic fashion, while the dub version turns down the guitars and turns up the synthesisers for a more heads-down dance floor excursion. on remix detail kuniyuki takahashi makes his 1st appearance on the label. on the vinyl you ll find an interpretation which can be best be described as pitched-down balearic-techno, which clicks, clacks and folds upon itself, drowning in waves of reverbed drama-drums at a deceptively low tempo. kuniyuki also provides a second remix as a digital exclusive, mildly pulling back on the pomp of the vinyl version, but replacing it with a spacious pathos, complete with backwards guitars that reminiscent of an electronic within without you era beatles. angaphora make their naar debut with their own wildly stirring remix of the lead track, which evokes the golden era of 80s melodic pop music to bewildering success, laden with digitised emotion, singing ebow guitar, and not a kick drum in site.

extrawelt are back! although in fairness, they were never gone. on the contrary, since their first release on james holdens border community label dropped in 2005, arne schaffhausen and wayan raabe have been responsible for a plethora of classics including schöne neue extrawelt and in aufruhr, their two seminal albums on cocoon recordings. the duo are one of the most booked live acts worldwide, commanding a huge fan base. their performances are the stuff of legend, making them the absolute highlight at every club and festival they play.

it’s no exaggeration to say that geraldo pino and his band the heartbeats kickstarted the whole soul/funk/afrobeat scene in west africa. mixing highlife, funk and jazz, and using the latest equipment, they laid waste to all before them. in 1966 fela kuti was a jobbing musician, eeking out a living with highlife bands. when gerlado pino came to town, it changed his life.
“pino tore up the scene,” he recalls in an interview with carlos moore. “i knew i had to get my shit together. and fast!”

following on from his release on beneath s mistry imprint, webstarr inaugurates his de grey label with a three-track collection of bass-flecked techno. opener we can t have nice things evokes punch drunk and the bristol sound as skittering beats deliver a two-step-like rhythm, propelled along by a synth melody that teases a potent breakdown. meanwhile warsaw bumps along with a brooding bassline that gives way to multi-layered percussion direct from an eastern bloc steel mill. closing track exit changes gear to play to the floor as a piercing kick and clap drum pattern combines with the subtlest of sub-bass and sharp synths that probe behind your eyes to lift the track effortlessly in a 2016 nod to detroit.

they could do weird edits or make eastern influenced dance music, collect gear and sit home or adapt library music for the dance floors. or they could get together and make the secret weapon. it doesn t really matter who they are and it doesn t really matter that it s just a demo, luckily rescued on a usb stick before their hd failed, what does matter is that it always rocks the party.
